The City of
Pafos is on the picturesque northwest coast
of
Cyprus. According to legend, Paphos is the birthplace of the Greek Goddess
of Love and Beauty. The whole district boasts many
archaeological sites and magnificent mosaics dating from prehistory down to
Byzantine and Mediaeval periods, all accessible to the visitors.
With a population of just
46.000, the town focuses around an attractive little harbour with
traditional open-air fish restaurants along a quayside of bright fishing
boats and pleasure craft.
In recent years, the Government
of Cyprus invested heavily in public works such as irrigation dams, water
distribution works, road infrastructure and the building of the Paphos
International Airport, thus contributing to the areas rapid growth.
Private initiative has also increased especially in
hotel, apartment and villa construction, golf courses and private marinas.
Today, Paphos has an air of
holiday charm combined with history, and olden-day elegance is lent to the
town by its classical style buildings in the upper part of town- known as
Ktima. This is the main residential and shopping area, whereas the lower
part of the town - known as Kato Paphos, has a life of its own.
It is built around a mediaeval castle and graced with
some luxury hotels, traditional restaurants, fish tavernas, bars and
souvenir shops. |
